Winestealslovers200121309This year my husband and I said goodbye to costly gifts and hello to handcrafted romantic dates in our pursuit to prove that thoughtfulness is the reason for the season. Last week we decided to host a competition and here were the rules: We both had to plan a date for each other from scratch (not on the website) and for under $50 (wallet friendly). We have posted our date nights below and you get to vote for the winner!

ADAM'S SUNDAY FUNDAY:

In planning a date for Molly, I began by listing off some of her favorite things: red wine, white wine, champagne, day drinking and not-so-friendly competition… and, yes, in that order! The only potential wrench in my plan was the rain that greeted San Diego the morning of our date, but not even rain could interrupt this perfect day of play.

Before the official date (and dollar tally) began, I did a morning coffee run to get Molly pumped for the day. I also presented Molly with pink argyle socks as a preview for our date, but she had no clue what the day had in store.winestealsflightmedium1213

Molly and I made our way to the relatively new Wine Steals in Point Loma. They have a nice, tree-lined outdoor patio, but the rain pushed us inside to a comfortable red couch, candle covered table and a window with the pleasant sound of beating rain… yes, nothing like accidental (yet seemingly purposeful) romance to win a date competition!  We started by sharing a wine tasting of six liberal pours for only $10, personally selected by one of Wine Steals’ very helpful wine enthusiasts. Molly also enjoyed their Twitter special of $1 for a glass of champagne. To help tone down our buzz, we completed our Wine Steals’ experience by sharing their delicious and generously sized breakfast sandwich with eggs, cheese, prosciutto, and spiced pork ($7.50). We then walked about 20 steps for our tee time! That’s right, adjacent to Wine Steals is a compact and fun 9-hole golf course, Sail Ho (which by now was fairly dry after the rain passed)… and there is nothing like competition to add excitement to a date for only $30. Although many types of competition may have served this purpose, I picked golf because golfing is how Molly and I spent the very first date she planned for us.

nextteemediumGolf was also perfect because neither of us are that good, and, therefore, can’t take it seriously. It was a fierce competition, and Molly put up an excellent fight, but despite all of my efforts I ended up with the win… perhaps a foreshadowing to the results of this date competition? 

I would have ended up exceeding the $50 date limit by only $0.12, but Mark of Wine Steals was so helpful that we couldn’t leave without leaving an extra generous tip.

All in all, an excellent date and the perfect way to spend a Sunday.
