Sunset_Behind_Admin_BuildingPLAY:  Begin your evening with dinner at Starlite in Mission Hills for a more eclectic evening (and over 21) or Burger Lounge in Little Italy for a budget concious play date.  Next, head to National Comedy Theatre for low-cost laughs- a "Whose Line is it Anyway?" type comedy show for all ages.  If your stomach doesn't hurt from laughing so much, head to Startlite for a drink at their sunken bar.  (Or do a late night dinner after the early 7:30pm showing.)

BLOG:  Ok... Why have I never heard of the National Comedy Theatre before?  Am I being punked?  If so, the laugh is on them!  Literally, because I laughed sooooo hard during this 100 minute show... and I didn't even purchase a beer at the concession stand.  This type of improv prevents you from having to think of witty conversation on the spot... They do the work for you!  And, there's nothing like laugher to help create (or reignite) that romantic spark.

National Comedy Theatre is another one of those San Diego secret gems!  It's a tiny theatre hidden in a bungalow in the Mission Hills district.  They have a 7:30pm and a 9:45pm show.  As you climb up through the "Swiss Family Robinson-esque" hideaway behind Shakespeare Pub (fitting name for a bar next to the theatre) you stumble upon a large group of people waiting outside... and you think... How did all of YOU know this was here???  However, once you are allowed into this seemingly secret place you find a crowd of all ages and auras.  Improv is a sport, so this show comes complete with a referee, cheerleading, audience participation and adult beverages!  (Disclaimer-  Because the laughter level really depends on audience participation and the performers, there may be nights that are more funny than others.)

There are Burger Lounges popping up all over San Diego and for good reason:  They have amazing grass-fed beef, organic ingredients, microbrews, and premium wine... all without having to tip a server!  They won SD Magazine's 2009 Best Local Hamburger Joint.  However, it has more of an urban "lounge" vibe than a neighborhood "joint" feel.  And they are as close to "wallet friendly" as you should get on a romantic date.

When you go to Starlite you feel as if you’ve gone back in time to a sexy, retro lounge where intellectual conversation fills the room as hipsters sip on trendy cocktails.  The doorway itself is a virtual porthole back to the 70’s.  I would recommend sitting at the sunken bar downstairs and ordering their signature “Starlite Mule” cocktail in a copper mug… OR head upstairs to their outdoor patio for a drink under the stars.  The food is rather interesting too, and the ambiance of this place is a date experience in itself.
