PLAY: Leave San Diego around 10am and head to Temecula. Your first stop should be a tasting at Thornton Winery just to wet your tounge. (Check out the free winery tours on the weekend.) Next, head right down the road to Ponte Winery where you will have already made a reservation for lunch at their succulent Smokehouse Restaurant. (Do a tasting while you wait for your table.) After lunch, stop by Wilson Creek. (They also do balloon rides with special occasion extras.) When you are done at Wilson, take your next right and enjoy the De Portola Wine trail. My recommendation on this trail is Leonesse Cellars. (Here you can pay extra for special seating at their V.I.P. table, request a couch in their romantic cellar- you may have to sign up for a membership, or hang out on their lawn and just enjoy the gorgeous view! Their “Small Bytes” menu is gourmet and great for a light appetizer.)
Once you are nice and wine-soaked... it's time to sober up. Head to the best kept secret in all of Temecula… Old Town! Your last tasting will be at the Temecula Olive Oil Company. (Olive Oil Tasting.) Lastly, top off your day with dinner at an eclectic gastropub, the Public House Restaurant. (They have live music, fire pits, and… beer! Just in case you are sick of wine already.) Thoughtful Detail: Hire a car to drive you around! Have champagne or wine ready when the car picks you up in San Diego. BLOG: Having Temecula so close to home is like having an old friend who lives in a nearby town. You only visit once a year, but when you get together you think, “Why don’t we hang out more often!” And to add to that analogy… your "friend" is attractive, ready to mingle and gets better looking with age! Temecula gets better every day… with over 30 wineries and a landscape that competes with Santa Barbara. Many of the wineries have new restaurants, live music, special wine tasting events, release parties, and great deals… and they want your business! So make sure to call ahead for their event calendars and request as much special treatment as possible. I’ve been to Temecula several times… on romantic dates, limo tours, and just recently for a wedding. My newest find was Old Town Temecula. It is so adorable! Please take my word on this. And it’s right next to the highway so you can either stop by before or after your wine tour. It is extremely clean, growing fast, and even has speakers on every street corner, so you basically dance your way down the street. Think: Julian small town feel… blended with Little Italy clean… sprinkled with East Village trend. I recommended Thornton Winery even though I have not actually been there because the building looks beautiful, and it is near the beginning of Rancho California Road where most of the wineries are located. It intuitively makes sense with the layout of this PLAY date. Plus, we were told by some insiders that it is the only winery that is capable of drawing big names for their summer concert series… so, they must be respectable. Please let us know your thoughts on this winery if you stop in. During the last trip, we stopped off and had lunch with friends at Ponte Winery. Smokehouse Restaurant had fabulous food and amazing ambiance. I definitely recommend it. I just love sitting under the covered terrace and contemplating how the powdery puffs of mist cool the patrons while never seeming to get them wet! I haven’t been to Wilson Creek in a while, but many of the locals recommend it. Plus, if you can book a hot air balloon ride, then you get to see all of Temecula without having to drive… although, I would have to do several “tastings” before gathering up the courage to cruise in a balloon. They also have a brand new restaurant that was highly recommended, Creekside Grill. Let us know if you try it. Leonesse Cellars is my LOVE. When I first voyaged to this vineyard last year I thought to myself, “Temecula has arrived!” Maybe it was the patchwork-quilt view or the classy atmosphere. The Small Bytes restaurant compliments their delicate location atop a small hill. They have an outdoor fireplace for the winter and picnic tables for the summer. I’m not that V.I.P. yet, but apparently they have a cellar with couches and candles for a seductive wine tasting experience. They also have a separate tasting area for large parties or special occasions- so make sure to call in advance to take advantage of their little unknown treasures. Back to Temecula’s best kept secret- Old Town! I’ve recommended Temecula Olive Oil Company because they have amazing olive oil, and it’s a unique tasting experience. If you choose to go to Old Town at the beginning of your wine tour you should pick up some olive oil and vinegar for a picnic! (If you are on a romantic date- nothing says "a keeper" like a man who picks up a gift for his mother!) Talk to Lynn E. and ask her about the olive oil tasting guide that suggests there is such a thing as “vomit” flavored olive oil… She will likely make up a story. If we had a Public House Restaurant in San Diego I would never cook dinner. When we visited this quaint gastropub they were doing construction on their backyard area, but our experience was still outstanding. It was a Sunday evening and they had a local singer playing cover songs on his guitar… with a voice like Bob Dylan! Our waiter was so attentive, and the food was enormous (definitely share). They have local beers and wine. I can’t wait to go back and relax by their backyard BBQ. Make sure to check out the Temecula Map Guide for events, maps, and general information. Also, I heard they have horseback riding through the vineyards and there are many dog-friendly wineries, stores, and restaurants!
