BLOG: Don't like the downtown dress code... but hate hanging out on the sterile streets of suburbia? Then South Park is your new favorite place! 30th/Fern Street cuts right through this tender town like the sun slices through the San Diego marine layer. But 30th Street's "Restuarant Row" is quickly growing in popularity, so enjoy this gem while you can! My friends who live in South Park treat Hamilton's Tavern like it is the Holy Grail of Ale. If you even attempt to compare it to another beer bar in San Diego you will immediately be silenced by these South Park snobs- even if they have never been to the place of comparison! I have never been here, but I heard it's a great little neighborhood bar with an even greater beer selection. Oh, and you can also bring your pets inside... The The Whistle Stop is one of the coolest bars in San Diego considering it has some of the most interesting weekly events in town (knitting classes on Sundays, Atari and Connect Four nights, etc.) This is where all of the South Park super-hipsters hang out... so hip that some of them even wear their wayferers inside- and it's really dark in there! The newest addition to South Park is Station Tavern. This venue is architecturally very cool- like an open air train depot. They have decent burgers and a small drink menu, but I expect their menu items and drink selections will quickly get better with time. Destination: Awesomeville! Vagabond is one of my favorite restaurants! It is so unique- with thought provoking quotes painted on the walls and eclectic dishes from around the world. The tall dripping candlesticks set the mood while the messages on the menus from customers past provide little tales for your dining experience. Look for ours. It starts out, "Dearest Valued Customer..." (Hint: It was written a couple weeks before we got married last year.) Note: Try to get here in between 4pm and 6:30pm for their daily Happy Hour Menu! Close your eyes and picture this: A pimped out metallic baby blue El Camino. Outside you see spinning rims and a pink neon light glowing from below. Inside you see a purple velvet bench seat and from the rearview mirror- a Virgin Mary air freshner, a sterling silver rosary, and a disco ball. Now open your eyes! You've just experienced the very essence of the El Camino: Super Cocina Mexicana in South Park. I'm not kidding... they have a spinning Jesus mural and life size pinatas!
