PLAY: First check on your dinner reservation over at Buon Appetito on India Street in Little Italy. Let them know you will be grabbing wine at their adjoining restaurant, Sogno Divino, so they can find you when your table is ready. When it's dinner time you can carry your wine over. After dinner walk up the block and get a gelato and an espresso macchiato at Pappalecco on Cedar Street.
BLOG: Young men playing stickball in the streets, neighbors yelling “Ciao Bella!” and the happy locals gathering their fresh fruit, bread and flowers at the Mercado on Saturday mornings! No… I’m not describing a small town in Italy… I’m describing a small Italy in San Diego! If you're truly overworked and underplayed it's time to set your clock to European time and live it up in Little Italy. I recently returned from a wonderful two-week trip with my husband in Italy (where I drank too much wine, decided to quit my job as a prosecutor and begin this website and my journey of becoming a professional play-er!), so clearly I'm an expert on Italian food... well, maybe not food (I'm NOT a foodie)... at least Italian ambiance. My husband and I have been going to Buon Appetito for years now, and they have the small Italian cafe feel. The food is great, and there is nothing better than sitting on the sidewalk patio enjoying a glass of wine in Little Italy. In fact, everytime I see people surrounded by friends and food in their sidewalk seats- It makes me think of Roma and the good life. Dolce Vita! Sogno Divino and Buon Appetito have the perfect partnership. You can go back and forth between the two restaurants in the back hallway. Sogno Divino is a great place for an appetizer and a drink. The atmosphere is seductive, and the Italian waiters are smooth (but don't be fooled, some of them are brazilian not Italian! Tricky). If you are looking for authentic Italian you must go to Pappalecco!!!! Not only do we trust Francesco and his co-owner brother, Lore, with our espresso fix, they are also trusted travel agents for all of your Italy insider needs (They planned our trip to Italy!) When you go to Pappalecco you find that you are suddenly on European time... And surrounded by European hipsters. Somehow everyone speaks the language (You can just throw out “Ciao!” and “Buon Journo!” to blend in.) The gelato is refreshing and the caffe is heartwarming. Pappalecco is also a great place for good conversation and people watching! We thank Francesco and Lore for bringing this gem to Little Italy. Check out "A Modern Roman Romance..." for another great Little Italy romantic date night!
