After having more fun then ever imagined, hop on your bikes and head back to the marketplace near the ferry landing. Stop off at Candelas or Il Fornio for dinner. (During certain months you will get to enjoy the “Summer Pops” concert fireworks from 9:15-9:30). Then make sure to return your bikes after another quick trip on the ferry. They usually let you drop them off behind the building after closing. BLOG: Some Like It Hot!! Or at least Marilyn Monroe enjoyed all that The Hotel Del Coronado had to offer. This is my FAVORITE date destination in all of San Diego… and the backdrop for my husband’s marriage proposal (engagement photo of us above). There is no better way to experience this island than by bike. For the two of you who have never been to Coronado, it is the Hamptons of our harbor. Prepare to feel like you are a wide-eyed, 16 year old on the dawn of your family vacation as you ride your cruiser down the extra-wide neighborhood streets. Wheel Fun Rentals is my recommendation for bike rentals because it is so conveniently located near the ferry, and they are flexible with pricing and returns. In the past, they have even been kind enough to put air in our privately owned beach cruisers for free! The Coronado Ferry is a cheap way to get out in the bay and enjoy the San Diego downtown skyline in all of its glory! It's only $6.50 round trip. If you haven’t been to The Hotel Del in the past couple of years… you will barely recognize it. The hotel has turned into a small village. There is a plethora of activities and entertainment in the summer, but still enough to do during the winter that it sustains itself as one of my top recommendations year-round. This hotel is just as accommodating to locals and day-players as it is to it’s paying guests. Hanging out at the Hotel Del is truly rejuvenating… maybe that’s why we always seem to run into recent divorcees on girls’ trips away from home! During the warmest months, the Sun Deck Bar & Grill hosts a live band that covers every summer-inspired song you can imagine on their sun soaked deck. The deck overlooks the hotel’s pool on one side and the beach on the other. The grill offers a “burgers and fries” appeal, but they’ve added some “pseudo-cabana” couches and fire pits for a trendier vibe. Expect to be entertained by the older crowd breaking out of their sea shells and dancing to the band! One of my favorite things to do is post up at the outdoor bar at Ocean 1500. It’s very in vogue with clean lines and crisp cocktails. To sum it up… take your guest(s) here if you are trying to impress. (But… you’re still at the beach- so feel free to wear your flip flops and bathing suit if you sit outside.) If Ocean 1500 is too hot (uber-trendy) and the Sun Deck Bar & Grill is too cold (no shirts or shoes required)… then Sheerwater would be “just right.” It’s casual, moderately priced, and has the same spectacular views. If you are really committed to indulging then you MUST go to the Del’s high-class wine bar, Eno. These people know wine and they are passionate about it! I recommend sitting outside and enjoying a wine flight paired with a cheese or chocolate tasting. It might be such a sensual experience that you head straight for the grand foyer and reserve a room for the night! Eno is pretty pricey, but they do have happy hour specials on Tuesdays (10 tastings for $10) and Fridays ($5 glasses), so there is no excuse not to check this place out. Spreckle’s Sweet Treats (Chocolate Treats), Mootime Creamery (Ice Cream), the Cabana Bar (Cocktails- but open seasonally) and the Babcock & Story Bakery (Caffe and Scones) are all little gems that give purpose to your walk-abouts at the Del. Seriously speaking- if you want TRUE relaxation it doesn’t get more simple than this: shell out the money for a massage at The Spa at the Del. Done. You’ve just paid for a day’s worth of “play.” Not only are their massages majestic… you can hit the jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and relaxation room, or hang out with your guest(s) at the exclusive spa pool. While you may feel as if you are on display like an exotic animal at the zoo (everyone will walk by the glass enclosed pool), it is only because people are peering in to see what they are not privy to. You can also bring drinks in from the neighboring bars so you can cocktail while you people watch. Need to Carbo-load for your trip back across the ferry? Then you should definitely dine at Il Fornio. It is a well-known Italian restaurant right next to the ferry landing and has a great view of the bay. Even waiting for your reservation is fun because they have an upbeat bar area alive with visitors. It’s a fairly formal atmosphere- but in a very casual location so don’t be intimidated. Their bread is to die for… but don’t die before you see the fire works at night during the summer. The brand new Candelas is upscale Mexican cuisine with great ambiance also next to the ferry landing. When you are inside you feel like you are outside (glass wall) and when you are outside you feel like you are inside (heat lamps and cozy atmosphere). There reliance on candles sets the tone for a nice snuggle on the ferry ride back home…
