PLAY: One month prior to your special date or group event (or as soon as possible) check out the wine classes and cooking classes provided by the Balboa Park Food & Wine School and register in advance. If you'd like to keep the party going afterwards, grab drinks in the lounge at The Prado, head out of the park to Cucina Urbana (post up at the bar and people watch!), or get one more glass of wine at Wet Stone Wine Bar & Cafe. We also have a link to more cooking class options HERE.
BLOG: Oh how I have been dying to try a cooking class or a wine class at the Balboa Park Food & Wine School! I'd much rather spend an evening having famous San Diego chefs personally teach me how to prepare mouth watering cuisine (overlooking the Prado Terrace and Balboa Gardens nonetheless) than to sit by the bar for 45 minutes waiting on a dinner reservation. I have not tried the classes at the Balboa Park Food & Wine School, but the pictures look great and the fact that they are very popular says a lot. Please let us know if you check this out! The Prado is such an eclectic restaurant- it could seriously be mistaken for another museum in Balboa Park! It's just as colorful and alive as the beautiful park it is surrounded by. The Prado is considered American Cuisine, but it's most "American" quality is it's two Happy Hours M-F from 4pm - 6pm and then from 8pm - 10pm! This place just makes me feel good about myself... As if my patronage at The Prado somehow imbues it's cultural climate upon me... without having to actually see any of the park. My newest find is Cucina Urbana!!! My heart has been stolen... or maybe I left it in their wine cellar?! This Italian-fusion restaurant is a breath of fresh air on Banker's Hill. It's the newly remodeled version of what was Laurel... and it's down-home design will make you want to spend the night. I don't even want to try to explain how cool this place is (or what a diverse and stylish crowd it hosts) because you MUST go and see for yourself. Also, check out the happy hour specials for awesome deals! When one of my best friends told me she had important news to share with me... I thought, there is only one place we can go for news this intimate! Wet Stone Wine Bar & Cafe. I just have a thing for wine-bars-in-hiding! Bring your binoculars while driving through Banker's Hill because Wet Stone is truly tucked away. But once you find it you will feel like you've found a hidden treasure! Oh, and by the way, my friend told me she had just gotten engaged! Yay!
