| A Venetian Gondola Cruise Through Coronado Waterfront Mansions |
PLAY: Start with an Italian dinner at Il Fornaio. Next, head down the Silver Strand to Loew's Coronado Bay Resort where they have Venetian Gondola Cruises through the canals of the Coronado Cays. Enjoy wine, chocolate covered strawberries, and moonlight while you snuggle under a blanket! Have a night cap inside the resort at the Mistral Bar.
BLOG: The Gondola Cruises through the Coronado Cays is by far the most romantic and creative play date in all of San Diego. (How can I make sure that my seriousness about this matter transcends your computer screen?!) This date is the real deal, so let me throw caution to the wind: Do not plan this play unless you are very much in love (or are ready to be so)- because hearts will break twice as hard after this outing. Thoughtful Detail: Prearrange to have a bottle of wine delivered to the Gondola from Loew's before the cruise. Or... if you really want to make this a special occasion, I would suggest booking a room! It's a nice accommodation after you've finished a bottle of wine on the water. It's hard to say whether you should have dinner at Il Fornaio before or after the Gondola Cruise. Here's why: There is a Gondola Cruise that sets off at sunset (but it's more expensive) and it isn't rare for a fireworks display to go off around 9pm in front of Il Fornaio (plus you can order hor's d'oevres on the boat ride prior to dinner). HOWEVER, the cruise is almost more romantic in the dark with the moonlight sparkling off the water and you can spy into the life of the rich and famous because the lights are on in the mansions (plus it's less expensive and they offer dessert). It's really at your preference. Il Fornaio is a well-known Italian restaurant right next to the ferry landing. It has a great view of the bay. Even waiting for your reservation is fun because they have an upbeat bar area alive with visitors. It’s a fairly formal atmosphere, but in a very casual location so don’t be intimidated. Their bread is to die for… but don’t die before you see the fireworks at night during the summer. The Gondola Cruises provided by The Gondola Company at the Loew's Coronado Bay Resort is only 6 miles from Il Fornaio. These boat rides make for a remarkable and memorable romantic experience. The ride takes you through the stunning canals of the Coronado Cays... along a corridor of mansions that most people don't even know exist in Coronado! I'm talking true waterfront mansions! The Gondola Company pays attention to detail- providing blankets, an ice bucket, wine glasses (for the wine you bring), and either an hor's d'oevre or chocolate covered strawberries. You can also pay extra for the gondolier to sing Italian Opera (but it always makes me giggle uncomfortably!) FYI- the gondolas are really made in Venice. My husband likes to yell "Buona Sera!" at the other gondolas passing by. I've never actually been to Mistral inside the Loew’s resort, but it boasts fine dining. Let me know what you think. Because it's so expensive, I thought that Mistral would best be saved for a drink after the Gondola Cruise. The inside of the hotel iteslf is very nice!
