Sailing-200Sail San Diego: (Stand Out Feature:  Wine and Beer Included & Bigger Boat for your Buck.)  After speaking with Michelle, the owner,  I learned that Sail San Diego offers 3 hour sails from Shelter Island for $85 per person, with a minimum of $510 for less than 6 people.  This includes beer, wine, other stocked beverages, and snacks.  The 40 foot sailboat fits up to 12 people (8-10 nicely).  The captain will take you on out into the pacific (headed towards the Coronados Islands off of Mexico, but not all the way), around the backside of Coronado Island, and through the bay (you can personalize your trip to your liking).  Michelle indicated that they want their guests to feel as if they were coming aboard a friend's boat, so they make sure to make the cabin inviting.  They don't recommend bringing food for the trip because during the 3 hours you will mostly be sailing; however they do pack the boat with sunscreen, towels, jackets, etc... Michelle said, "You name it, the boat will have it!" 

Shelter Island Sailing: (Stand Out Feature:  Many boats to choose from, More time for your money, & Super Pesonalized Trips.)  After speaking with John, I learned that Shelter Island Sailing offers trips for one flat rate- whether you want to go for 12 minutes or 12 hours- you pay for the day depending on which size boat you select (see non-member rates on the charter fleet page)- but John recommends a 4 hour tour.  You can personalize your trip and go anywhere you want, with the captian maintaining discretion.  All captains are sailing instructors as well... so, they are happy to teach you.  You can also bring your own food and drinks (alcohol ok if over 21), and they will provide you with a grill on board the boat!  A picnic at sea!  Just no powdered sugar jelly donuts... it's the only bad experience they've had.

The America's Cup Experience: (Stand Out Feature:  Racing on a Gigantic Famous Sail Boat & Opportunity for Meeting New Friends.) First, they offer a "Daily sail" which is geared towards individuals who simply want the experience of being on a super-sized sailboat but who don't want all the teaching and interaction.  This tour is only 1 1/2 hours and is priced at $49 a person.

Second, the America's Cup Experience provides a 2 1/2 hour race opportunity, but participation is a huge factor!  They have 2 enormous racing boats- the Abracadabara & the Stars and Stripes.  They must book 6 to 8 on each boat in order to race, but if they have less they will at least take one boat out for sailing.  It is $99 a person and runs from 2:30pm - 5pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

From 11am to 3pm on Saturdays the famous 139 foot Yacht America (the MOST famous racing sailing vessel in the world) sets sail for a 4 hour tour that includes whale and dolphin watching, eating, drinking and making new friends. They have a "no seasickness" gaurantee and offer free entry to the Maritime Museum with purchase. Adults are $85 and children under 12 are $44. The yacht holds 90 people.

The price does include some snacks and beverages, but part of the experience is bringing your own lunch and alcohol for a picnic!
